What is CPI

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and is one of the most closely watched indicators of inflation in the world's largest economy. It measures the average change in the prices consumers pay for a basket of goods and services. MoM - monthly price change. YoY - price change vs. the same month a year ago; the headline figure the Fed and media track. Core CPI - CPI excluding food and energy; considered the most reliable gauge of underlying inflation.

When is CPI?

When is CPI? The Consumer Price Index is a monthly inflation report released around the 10th–14th of each month at 8:30 am ET and significantly affects the US dollar, bond, and stock markets.

Economic importance

CPI is a key indicator of inflationary pressure in the U.S. economy. The report often causes increased market volatility, as markets react quickly to the data. Higher-than-expected CPI figures suggest rising inflation and can influence expectations for future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, which, in turn, affect the U.S. dollar.
